Registration Information

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence is pleased to present the 2018 Fall Symposium Series, to be held Thursday through Saturday, October 18–20, at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. The titles of the eight symposia are as follows:

An informal reception will be held on Thursday, October 18. A general plenary session, in which the highlights of each symposium will be presented, will be held on Friday, October 19.

Symposia generally range from 40–75 participants each. Participation will be open to active participants as well as other interested individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant will be expected to attend a single symposium. Registration information will be available on the AAAI web site in August 2018.

AI4K12 Symposium

This colocated symposium associated with the AAAI "AI for K-12" Initiative, recently launched in collaboration with the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) and AI4All, will be held Saturday, October 20. Growing Federal Support for AI Research

KKautz will describe current efforts to expand and coordinate support by government and industry in AI research. At the National Science Foundation, support of AI is now an agency-wide priority. In addition to traditional support from CISE/IIS, support for AI is coming from a number of recent cross-division and interagency programs, such as the Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier. NSF is growing funding for research on the social impacts of AI. All major federal agencies that fund AI R&D, including NSF, Department of Defense, Health and Human Services, NASA, and many others, have begun to coordinate their efforts through a new AI working group at NITRD. The Community Computing Consortium is leading a study with support from NSF to create a “roadmap” that is expected to influence government support for AI research over the next decade.

Henry Kautz is Director for the Division Information & Intelligent Systems in the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. He is professor at the University of Rochester, where he was founding director of the Goergen Institute for Data Science. He is a past president of AAAI and past chair of the Section on Information and Computing at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research is in knowledge representation and reasoning, social media analytics, and healthcare applications.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST PREREGISTER. All accepted authors, invited speakers, symposium participants, and other invited attendees must register by August 24, 2018. Participation will be open to active participants as well as interested individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. All registrations should be completed by September 21, 2018.

The conference registration fee includes admission to one symposium, access to the electronic proceedings, coffee breaks, and the opening reception.

Refund Requests

The deadline for refund requests is September 28, 2018. All refund requests must be made in writing to fss18@aaai.org. A $100.00 processing fee will be levied on all refunds granted.

Hotel Information

For your convenience, AAAI has reserved a block of rooms at the Westin Arlington Gateway. The Westin Arlington Gateway is located in the Ballston area of Arlington. It is a short walk from the Ballston Metro Station, which allows guests to easily explore Arlington, downtown Washington, DC, Alexandria, or Georgetown. Reagan National Airport is easily accessible via the Washington Metro rapid transit.

The conference room rate per night is $199.00 (King/Double).

Rates do not include applicable state and local taxes (approximately 13.25%), or hotel fees in effect at the time of the meeting. Symposium attendees must contact the Westin Arlington Gateway directly. Please request the group rate for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) when reserving your room. The cut-off date for reservations is September 26, 2018 at 5:00 PM ET, local time at the hotel. Reservations after this date will be accepted based on availability at the hotel's prevailing rate. All reservations must be secured by one night's deposit per room, via credit card. Reservations may be cancelled with no penalty up to 5:00 pm, 72 hours prior to the date of arrival. After that time, a penalty of one night's room and tax will be incurred. Upon check-in, date of departure must be confirmed. Early departure will result in a fee equal to one night's guest room rate.

Metro Rail

Metro service is available from Reagan National Airport to The Westin Arlington Gateway. The cost is approximately $5.00 per person one way, depending on time of travel. From the airport, board the blue line towards Largo. Exit after 5 stops to Rosslyn and transfer to the Orange line towards Vienna. Exit at Ballston Metro Station. The hotel is approximately 3 blocks from the station.

Shuttle

The Super Shuttle van service will take guests directly from the airport to The Westin Arlington Gateway. The shuttle service picks up passengers outside of the terminal. Approximate costs from each of the airports are listed below and may be subject to change. Please visit the Super Shuttle website or call Super Shuttle at 800-BLUE-VAN (258-3826) to confirm current rates. Please note that reservations are required.

From Reagan National Airport, take the Gesorge Washington Memorial Parkway North, and then merge onto I-395 South toward Richmond. Merge onto Washington Boulevard via Exit 8A toward Ridge Road and then onto US-50 W/Arlington Boulevard toward Falls Church. Take the Glebe Road exit, turn right onto North Glebe Road/VA-120 North. The hotel is on the right.
